Key Definitions
Asynchronous learning
Refers to courses that do not take place in real-time. Learners & the instructor are NOT required to be at the same place at any time. Students access course materials at their own pace, within the limitations set by the instructor. Because there's no set class time, asynchronous learning can be especially effective for students with time constraints or busy schedules.
NOTE: Fully Asynchronous courses are offered through Kean Online
Synchronous learning
Refers to learning where learner(s) and instructor are in the same place, at the same time, in order for learning to take place.
Can occur as in-person classes and/or as online LIVE synchronous meetings
Hybrid learning
Refers to learning that blends both Synchronous (in-person and/or online LIVE) and Asynchronous learning elements
Hybrid Courses
Kean University provides five forms of hybrid courses (see graphic below) that allow departments to optimize the learning process for students & encourage effective engagement with course content.
Three hybrid formats seamlessly integrate in-person and online learning
F2F S: combining face-to-face instruction with online LIVE synchronous sessions;
F2F A: pairs face-to-face classes with online asynchronous learning
Mixed: a combination of face-to-face sessions, online LIVE synchronous, and remote asynchronous learning
Two modes are entirely online, eliminating the necessity for physical attendance on campus:
Remote Synchronous: taught via online LIVE synchronous sessions
Remote Sync & Async: taught via a combination of online asynchronous and online LIVE synchronous learning
